This site was chosen due to the deteriorated state of its urban fabric and the need for a sustainable approach for its people and heritage, thus this project is proposed as a new research facility in the heart of the area to provide setting for research and development in the urban fields to upgrade slums and squatting settlements, and strategies for new settlements in other areas.

This facility can provide two senarios of usage; as a major governmental organisation , or as rental office spaces for NGO’s that work in the field of urban development to coordinate their effort in the most efficent way for this country. As a Historical reference the open spaces will have the same gradient in space context as the ones that were demolished over years of conflict in this site.

2012

A part of the plan is tested using a range of softwares to determine the effectivness of materials (i.e. rammed earth partition) and isolation membranes .

A model is built using revit software to simulate the weather data of cairo on the building and the need of energy, cooling and heating requirments
After Measuring the solar radiation in this particular site, it is conducted that the yearly incindent radiations are 1696 kw/m2 , Solar panels are then introduced Costing (147$) (537 L.E.) per meter square Then calculating how many panels will be required to generate the amount of energy used for cooling and heating ; 245340 kw / 1696 kw/m2 (80% efficiency) = 144 m2 Cost of theses panels = (144 x 537) = 77328 LE . Without panels The kilowatt according to Egyptian Electric Company is 18 Pt/kw, Which means it will cost 245340 x 0.18 = 44159 LE/ year The Price of the Solar panels are reimbursed in 1.5 years.
