Increasingly in cities today, rampant introduction of urban infrastructure [highways, motorways, underpass, railway lines]causes
i]disruption in urban fabric
ii]fissures in existing communities
And such spaces /fissures in the long run become ‘unused’/’underutilized’/dead or void spaces.
The safety of such spaces is questionable and since every problem has an opportunity, the scope of quality of public realm in such spaces is explorable.
This project attempts to paint a picture of one such fissure being
“Stitched” by using design as a tool to ‘context’ specific ideas to integrate the community.

ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSITION - to explore how an urban divide caused due to an infrastructure project
can be stitched

KEY TERMS - urban edge conditions,urban divide,urban infrastructure,urban stitch,closing the economic
loop,circular economy,recycled plastic skin,upcycled products,catalyse,inclusive public
space,wholesale-retail,injection moulding

SCOPE & LIMITATIONS - i.the project will catalyse a closed loop economic system taking cues from the
context consisting of plastic recycling industries.
ii.the existing underutilized slab will be retained and certain architectural
interventions will convert it into an inclusive public space.
iii.the project will lead to the formation of a new edge condition amongst various
others such as an underpass below, roads on the sides, indian railways network
towards the west and a proposed namma metro line above.

DESIGN PROCESS - i.the initial explorations of urban edge conditions led to further explorations of how
these urban edge conditions can play a role in the formation of the image of a city.
ii.the chosen site has an interesting congregation of various edge conditions, both
existing and proposed, one of which has led to an urban divide
iii.a need to stitch this divide with a new condition leading to an urban catalysis was
realised.
iv.structural explorations as a medium to execute a physical,social & economical stitch
by taking cues from the context is the direction taken. Formation of a closed loop
economic system is one of the main aims of the urban catalysis.
v.programatically the above direction evolves into upcycled plastic products
manufacturing component,wholesale-retail component,design+R&D component
and inclusive public space such as event space, exhibition space, brand activation
space, space for political gatherings, space for temporary systems such as food
trucks etc.
