The International Union of Architects (UIA) has selected the theme for World Architecture Day as "Architecture... for a better world", which will be celebrated on October 1, 2018. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the International Union of Architects and coincides with the United Nations World Habitat Day, under the same theme.

Celebrated on the first Monday of every October, World Architecture Day is announced to show appreciation for the work architects do and to celebrate some of the great global architectural works.

The UIA's theme "Architecture... for a better world" to celebrate the power and value of architecture. By choosing a different theme for reflection each year, World Architecture Day aims to draw the attention of professionals and the public to issues concerning cities and housing.

This year, for the first time, the UIA held an international competition for design of the 2018 World Architecture Day poster. The UIA received hundreds of entries, from which a distinguished jury of graphic designers chose the winner by Ana Rute Costa and Rúben Ferreira Duarte of Portugal.

"Architecture can help our planet face two of its gravest problems - environmental degradation and ever greater human needs. Architects can help to reverse patterns that destroy heritage, degrade habitat, squander resources and perpetuate social imbalances," said Thomas Vonier, UIA President.

"Architecture can make our world better, for all people. Through design, we can help stop the destruction of natural landscapes and valuable agricultural land. Through design, we can help meet the staggering global scale of human need, much of it concentrated in our largest cities."

"The world’s architects - now numbering some 3.2 million in all - share a commitment to providing basic services for all people; to making our cities cleaner and stronger; to helping people in need; and to providing safer, more accessible public spaces for everyone."

"We know the power of architecture, and we will share it . . . for all, for a better world.  On behalf of the UIA Bureau, the UIA Council and our Member Sections across the globe, please join us," Vonier continued.
