Kengo Kuma has completed new China Academy of Art’s Folk Art Museum in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. The new building, which consists of museum and conference hall in its program, belongs to the institution China Academy of Art- proposing a diverse pool of artistic talent, has a distinctive structure integrating theory and practice, focuses on human care and social needs, and combines modern technical and cultural disciplines with traditional artistic ones. China Academy of Art’s Folk Art Museum is settled according to the contextual appearance and structural form in the region. The whole building is integrated with the landscape by stressing its roof angles and presents a view to the local village. All roofs are raised up to catch a view in the city and also form a multi-layered roof structure attaching to each other. The black covered roof setting creates a dynamic effect inside by playing with light, shadow and daylight, bringing different atmosphere to the inside.

The interior of the building flows with several ramps that are covered with different materials like wood and granite. Moreover, the angles of roof create empty holes with the points of lights. All the angles of ramps are arranged according to the differentiation of angles of roofs and do not cut the height of the interior space. The visitor meets some sort of unexpected views inside introducing some playful openings randomly.
