Design intentions
AIRchitecture - Delft`s Flying Architecture Faculty Vision: A new concept for an architecture faculty; Dynamic learning from "hands-on" experience; Being there will enhance passion for architecture and responsibility to the people and the environment around the world; Flying workspace allowing future collaboration and student exchange; Energy efficient implementations as an integral part of the design; Minimal footprint; Visionary approach that can be merged within existing educational fabrics; Urban and global connections and awareness; Sustainable principles with economic and ecologic viabilities; Integration with the new green campus design by mecanoo. On-site building: The static place will serve as a social place; Library, offices, lecture halls, restaurant, storage place and auditorium are right on and below ground; Students, teachers and visitors will feel home and part of nature; Sharing spaces approach and using facilities on-campus and in other universities around the world and around the city; The low building silhouette will merge into the landscape and add more value to the entire campus. Studio space: inside the zeppelins and in other faculties around the world; Office space: 2700 sq.m. + shared space in nearby faculties; Auditorium: 2500 sq.m.; Exhibition space: 500 sq.m.; Library: 1000 sq.m.; Book store and club: 450 sq.m.; Restaurant: 500 sq.m. + outdoor; Storage: 500 sq.m.; Zeppelin boarding platform: 200 sq.m. Off-site "floating building": Plug and play flying studio class rooms; Smallest impact on the environment; The building performs as an educational machine; International knowledge from a fronted contact and therefore unforgettable ; Learning through motion and arising the activist part of the student; Inspiring learning; "More than a physical thing"; Strong impression; Flexible learning programs according to the theme, climate, budget and so on; Iconic part of the university campus and the city of Delft; Zeppelin fleet for five studio years, for local and international flights, for special guests and visitors and for backup; The landing area will not be limited to the faculty zone alone; The main campus road will be able to host several zeppelins as well; Constant interaction with students and communities around the world. Materials, Technology and Social behavior: The infrastructure of the zeppelin will include carbon and aluminum; PV cells will be embedded within the skin of the balloon; None flammable materials (Helium fill); Living within the zeppelin will educate to live in a self sufficient environment, like in a submarine; Students on board will need to cooperate together and perform as a team; Learning from real close contact experience and from aerial view as well will shape the character of the new generation of students; Ultimate abstraction of a building towards the virtual era; Encourage creativity and responsibility; Educational building of the future will see beyond architecture; Stimulate scientific development with unbreakable connection to technology; Critical reflection and debate on the zeppelins, between students, architects and city people who will encounter this phenomenon in the sky; Ultimate sustainable design ; More than a building - a way of life, living the sustainable ideology; Acquire passion for architecture; The building notion is being questioned while in the air and regained after landing and seeing a new case study; Mekelpark`s energy line qualities are being stretched towards the green roof of the hiding architecture faculty.
