It was rather theorists and historians of architecture who could formulate meaningful concepts and categories relevant for appreciating and discussing architectural forms.Architectural semiotics had its heyday in 1970s but could not culminate in an agreed upon theoretical framework. Despite of that, semiotics -still an unfinished project- remains the most useful theoretical resource for studying the formal language of architecture.
