The term is related to the process of nation building in nineteenth century Europe. At that time a romantic idea of landscape and rural houses was applied to an urban context and architecture. In the eighties, the term regionalism was criticized as being too nationalistic, folkloristic and too unspecific. It therefore never became a serious part of the terminology in architecture history and theory (Lampugnani 1983).
