The visibility of research.CALL FOR PAPERS

Historically, society has recognized architects for their role in the creation of buildings and less so for their role in the production of knowledge. Research advances the discipline of architecture by introducing new ideas, testing questions, defining methodology, developing technology, and promoting critical discourse. Yet exactly how research shapes design and the built environment is not always clear. For many, its contributions remain all but invisible. The theme of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC) 2013 Architectural Research Conference is visibility, in all its possible connotations. The goal of this year’s conference is to interrogate the idea of visibility from a variety of perspectives, in order to bring research itself into sharper focus. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte welcomes researchers, educators, and practitioners in architecture and affiliated design and technical professions to participate.Call for Paper Abstracts - due October 8, 2012

World Peace City.Illustrations by Edgar Gonzalez

From the article by Anna Bates:
World Peace City is Guatemalan artist Edgar Gonzalez’s Utopian vision of a city. The piece is made up of 300 individual drawings to date, each completed on Gonzalez’s commute from Brooklyn, where he now lives, to Manhattan, where he works as a bartender.
“When I started the project I had no idea what it was going to be,” says Gonzalez, who was unaware of his talent when he started drawing, and just wanted to kill time on the train. Each section of the piece fuses buildings from around the world into one jumbled up landscape, and the sections link up to form a vast panorama. “It’s two worlds,” he says. “The one we recognise and the one we want it to become.”
Drawing on the train has its problems; the piece is full of buildings that exist just to cover up wobbly lines. But the commute is also very much part of the piece. “I got talking to someone on the train one day and he told me about a landmark in a town in his country for me to include. It’s like my biography,” says Gonzalez, who has spent four years working on the piece. “I can tell you exactly what happened and what I had in my mind when I look at every one of them.”
Gonzalez doesn’t yet know what the final piece will look like, but he “think[s] it will be round,” and estimates that there are another 100-200 sections to go before it is completed.

The second International Congress on Ambiances will be held under the aegis of the Ambiances International Network. The congress, organized every four years, is one of the network’s main events, an international gathering for researchers, artists and players engaged in analyzing the ambiance-related dimensions of the built environment and in the sensory construction of the contemporary world.
Many approaches are at work in the field of architectural and urban ambiance, and these multiple contributions nurture its rich diversity. The International Congress on Ambiances aims to give voice to this activity, feeding on work exploring new forms of exchange between what is designed and what is experienced, between the measured and the qualified, the projected and the tested, the material and the immaterial.
