A new INFO POINT for Kosice 2013
The design for the new Info Point for Kosice, the European Capital of Culture 2013, is a confident urban contribution, adding numerous
values to the ancient surroundings of the City Center of Kosice by transporting and emphasizing the importance of culture into society.
This “public house of culture” consists of two main volumes.
The lower volume is massive and “bulky,” containing an exhibition area as well the toilet
facilities.
In contrast, the higher volume is a fragile and cantilevered construction, resulting in a grand gesture - a significant porch - which acts as a sunshade and as a sign/information
carrier of the European Cultural Capital in 2013.
Moreover this part of the building accommodates
the main info point, where people can get information about activities concerning culture in Kosice, a press area, a small storeroom,
a backoffice and a lounge area, offering
people facilities to sit down and relax.
The info point includes also a small bar, where drinks and finger food can get
provided.
In between the 2 main volumes, the passage – a walkway open to public 24 hours – ensures
that the pavilion is part of the city all the time. Several awnings are “flying” over the passage emphasizing a transmitting function of culture in the sense of openness, lightness and transparency.
Design Concept
The first design model is done out of lead. The forms were generated in a typical lead pouring.
This technique is used to create a form that is liberated from the usual preset limitations.
By extracting the main characteristics, interpretation
and application to the task, the free form becomes an expressive, liberated and explicit architecture.
