Refined materiality contrasts the site’s lush canyon landscape. Sitting upon a stone plinth, the 60’ long residence appears partially buried into the hillside. The longitudinal form optimizes the site’s canyon and city views to the southeast. Environmental and financial concerns with regard to minimizing grading, excavation and retention walls strongly informed the residence’s occupation of the site. Sustainable strategies such as solar orientation/ power, cross ventilation, water reclamation & indigenous landscaping were also important design considerations.
