SoftGrid (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. is an architecture and urban planning practice founded and owned by Director Rolf Demmler and set up in 2008 as fully registered WOFEI. The practice emerged as an independent firm from the SoftGrid network, an international design company network cofounded by Rolf Demmler and established in London and Amsterdam in 2007. SoftGrid Shanghai has been working on numerous urban planning and architecture commissions across the whole of China since its official set up and is now a firm of 8 people in Shanghai concentrating on large scale urban planning and challenging architectural design commissions. SoftGrid Shanghai has been working on numerous urban planning and architecture commissions across the whole of China since its official set up and is now a firm of 8 people in Shanghai concentrating on large scale urban planning and challenging architectural design commissions. These include mixed-use inner city developments and inner city regeneration as well as scenic landscape resorts and rural countryside projects. SoftGrid Shanghai is also acting as the lead architect on several occasions, supervising and subcontracting other design work such as landscape and interior design. The practice has been involved in prestigious projects like the Shanghai 2010 EXPO and the Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid. SoftGrid Shanghai has a European design background and methodology but also an over four year experience of their foreign staff in China. This is reflected in the Director’s educational and professional backgrounds as well as the design team, consisting of Chinese bilingual staff trained at top universities in China with additional educational and professional experience in Europe and foreign staff, educated and professionally trained in Europe and the USA. Through various collaborations SoftGrid Shanghai has by now established strong ties with major international and domestic developers, technical consultants, local design institutes and construction contractors.
