Architecture Critic Acknowledges a Mistake in Critique of Zaha Hadid

The critic Martin Filler has acknowledged a significant error in a scathing review he wrote for The New York Review of Books that mentioned the architect Zaha Hadid.

Mr. Filler’s review of Rowan Moore’s “Why We Build: Power and Desire in Architecture,” in the June 5 issue, prompted Ms. Hadid to file a libel suit in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan last week.

In the review, Mr. Filler wrote that she had shown no concern for the deaths of construction workers in Qatar, where a stadium she designed is to be built for the 2022 World Cup. Hundreds of migrant workers in Qatar have died on other construction projects, according to a series of reports in The Guardian, but work had not begun on Ms. Hadid’s project, Al Wakrah stadium, when she made the remarks that Mr. Filler quoted....Continue Reading
