Apart from the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, the Uljanik shipyard is an important feature of the city of Pula, located in Istria. When city authorities started to consider relocating the shipyard, lighting designer Dean Skira came up with the idea of highlighting them instead.

The Tourist Board of Pula, together with the Uljanik shipyard and several private companies, were inspired by the idea and provided the necessary funds for the project, which they hoped would cast the 158-year-old shipyard (still in operation) as vital industrial heritage. Key to the project was creating a night-time icon, one that would give visual appeal to the city and create an experience for tourists and city dwellers alike......Continue Reading
