Farsta Centre by COBE

Stockholm is one of Europe’s fastest growing city regions. Over the next 30 years it is expected to grow by 140.000 inhabitants. To handle this growth the City of Stockholm has defined 9 strategic growth centres around Stockholm. The first one to be developed is Farsta.

Farsa Centrum is the largest shopping mall in Stockholm with over 150 stores and over 40,000 m2. It was developed in the 1960's as the centre of Farsta - a Stockholm suburb developed from modernist ideals of life in the green and separation of functions. Today Farsta Centre is the first of 9 strategic groth centers in Stockholm - one of Europe’s fastest growing city regions. Can we transform Farsta Centrum from a 1960's mall into a vibrant, active, diverse and dense city centre for the inhabitant of Stockholm?

Farsta was developed in the 1960’s as part of an ambitious vision for the suburbs as self sustaining entities containing both housing, work-places, and city centres. In the centre of Farsta was Farsta Centrum, a state-of-the-art shopping mall.

Today, Farsta Centrum still has a lot qualities - high quality modernist architecure, good sized public spaces, set in a lush and beautiful landscape.

But also a lot of challenges - vast parking spaces, urban backsides, unsafe places and monofunctionality - making it unable to function as a real city centre for the inhabitants of Farsta.

Based on the analysis of the existing situation we have developed 9 action points aiming at strengthening the qualities of Farsta and turning its challenges into opportunities.

Can we create an updated version of the ABC city, built on the qualities of the existing vision but transformed to accomodate the needs and wishes of current and future inhabitants?

Farsta Centre by COBE

Our plan for Farsta Centrum aims to transform it from a shopping mall, into an active, vibrant and lively city centre for the inhabitants of Farsta.

We propose 3 strategies:

Strategy 1 - Create neighbourhoods! The Station Neigbourhood

The Park Neighbourhood

The City Neighbourhood

Strategy 2 - Activate! An active and recreational spine becomes the heart of the area and connects it to its surroundings.

Strategy 3 - Connect! A series of promenades connect existing and new, the different neighbourhoods and the area to its surroundings.
