Seoul’s ‘Awesome’ Islets Finally Open

The Floating Island, or Some Sevit, a group of three man-made islets on the Han River, has opened to the public.Seoul Metropolitan Government

It has taken several years, but a project in Seoul featuring three man-made islets on the Han River has fully opened to the public.On the islets there is a convention center, as well as cafes and restaurants. A stage for performances floats to the side.

The development was originally named the Floating Island, but at an official opening on Wednesday it was renamed Some Sevit. A city official said the first half of the name came from the English word awesome, though it also sounds like the Korean word forisland. Sevit is a combination of the Korean words for three and light.

Not all Seoulites see the project as awesome. It was completed in September 2011 but remained unopened as the head of the company operating the project was charged with embezzling from investors. In 2012, the executive was sentenced to five years in prison, a term reduced to three years at appeal a year later.....Continue Reading
