Czech architect firm Atelier 8000 plans for an isolated lodge in Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains are so dramatic that, if realised, they could well lure design aficionados to this little-known region in droves.

Resembling an immense Rubik’s cube that has been wedged into the ice, the tilted abode – named Kezmarska Hut - would incorporate restaurants and lodgings for intrepid travellers holidaying in this region. The Tatra Mountains are Slovakia’s tallest, and the slopes prove popular with skiers in winter. While the lodge’s looks are unconventional, its designers say they would enable it to fit into the surrounding landscape seamlessly: “Due to its position within the landscape the cuboid evokes an erratic block left behind by the retreating glacier. In the context of mountain peaks the sharp edges of the building merge into the outline of the neighbouring rocks when viewed from distance and thus naturally join the landscape of the site.”...Continue Reading
